BOOK REVIEWS

February 14th, 2011

Mrs. Christiano's language arts classes read many different types of books.  Please read on to see if there is a book for you!

BLACK STAR BRIGHT DAWN     By: Scott O’Dell

Winter blizzards, icy eewonucks,  blustery winds, below zero temperatures, hazardous trails of the annual Iditarod in the frozen Alaskan wilderness…

Does that type of adventure appeal to you?  Take a journey of a lifetime as you step into the life of  a young, determined Inuit girl and her courageous team of sled dogs.  An eighteen year old Bright Dawn embarks on the Iditarod trail when her father, Bartok, gets injured and cannot complete the yearlong training process. Dawn is ready as she trains hard and quickly, studying every move and listening about the dangers that she  will need to overcome on  the 1,179  mile adventure.  Oteg, an experienced,  spiritual musher, guides her on the trail, educating her to the “ins and outs” of safely participating in the climb of the Iditarod Race from Anchorage to Nome.  Will this young, amateur musher succeed in a sport where young women are few in number?

Her team of dogs ,led by the stubborn leader Black Star,  show amazing ability as they navigate Dawn through the harsh ,bitter -cold wilderness.    Anticipating danger and escaping  from near-death events is their specialty! As Dawn’s father, Bartok, believes , “This is a test of bravery”.

Scott O’Dell , also the author of Island of The Blue Dolphins and  Zia,  beautifully depicts not only the grueling Iditarod sled race but also the fierce determination shown by the brave legion of mushers with realism.  This is a 10 star book by far and worth every second of reading!!

 Podbean Adventure

Our first podcast will include evaluations from period 3/4's first teaching experience as fifth graders. Our language arts class visited Miss Kaptein's second grade class at Rolling Hills on Thursday, November 12th. Students read a Dr. Seuss book and planned follow up activities to teach a student a lesson.

Evaluate the success of your lesson.  What do you think was the best part of your lesson?  What would you improve upon?  Did you enjoy this experience?  Post your comments below by clicking on "comment", write your response, and use your first name with last initial to sign it.
